Grand Slam LA

We’re always stoked when a new shop takes on our products, especially when they’re as like-minded like this. Located in Virgil Village in Los Angeles, Grand Slam LA is a tennis lifestyle store founded by NYC streetwear veteran, Greig Bennett. Featuring an array of well curated goods, it’s a spot to put on your map whether you live in LA or are just visiting. We caught up with Greig recently to dive deeper into what’s going on at the corner of Virgil and Normal.

Can you tell us about your store? What is Grand Slam Los Angeles?

Grand Slam LA is a lifestyle Tennis Boutique focusing on independent and local brands. Being in LA, one of if not the apparel manufacturing hub of the United States there is a strong culture of independent apparel projects and brands. Vibes wise, we are kind of like a skate shop with the subject being tennis.

What kinds of products do you stock and who are some of the brands represented?

On the apparel side we have a handful of independent and local apparel brands, we also have an incredible collection of vintage tennis apparel. On the accessories side we have a nice selection of incense, candles, ceramics, self care goods and vintage sunglasses (we partnered with a family owned optician with a 30+ year collection of vintage eyewear).

Some of the brands we carry are East Side Tennis Club, Manor, Pasta Catalog, Oyster, Tropic Best, WeedSport, Flaneur, L11, Richsport, Tried & True and Really Good Socks.

Although we are a lifestyle tennis boutique, we play and our friends play. We stock Dunlop, Wilson, and Penn balls, A handful of Unique Sports (Tourna) products, and Richsport raquet bling.

You mention East Side Tennis Club, can you tell us a little bit about this group and in general the tennis scene in Los Angeles?

East Side Tennis Club is a loose knit group of people that play tennis together on the east side of the city. Some people play in diff leagues and teams or move around a the city a bit but it’s just a friend group united by tennis. East side tennis club is one of the myriad tennis crews / cliques in LA. Unlike other games or scenes, everyone gets along though. There are cliques but it’s not cliquey if that makes sense? People just kind of have their people and hang with them. This summer I participated in The Courts Summer Slam ladder and met a lot of new and great people to play and hang with which was awesome.

How often are you playing tennis? And can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got into the sport?

I am playing less than I would like to. Probably down to a couple times a week from 4-5 times. In terms of how I got in… A friend of mine got two Yonex racquets and needed someone to hit with. We went to van cortland park and this was the gateway. The hook was a couple months later in Martha’s Vineyard spending hours a day for a week with a friend who could hit and lived across from a har-tru court. I have been in love since.
