On November 18, 1966, Los Angeles Dodger pitcher Sandy Koufax retired from baseball. He had just won the CY Young Award, appeared in the World Series and finished the season with a career high in wins (27) and ERA (1.73). Having been plagued by arm trouble, Koufax pitched through the extreme pain with help of cortisone shots and pain pills. Choosing his health over wealth, his early retirement came at the age of 31.
